Denver-based yoga studio is the first of its kind in Colorado to offer Kemetic philosophy and movement practice that originated from Ancient Egypt

DENVER, CO— Urban Sanctuary will be offering Kemetic Movement, a slower paced practice that involves deep breathing techniques, starting on Saturday, July 24. Kemetic movement’s origins go back to ancient Africa, which was also known as “Kemet'' and means “land of the blacks.” According to Urban Sanctuary Founder and Kemetic Movement Practitioner Ali Duncan, hieroglyphics on Egyptian temple walls dating back to 10,000 years ago show pharaohs in stretching postures; this revelation pre-dates the practice of yoga from India.

“Yoga has been westernized and unfortunately the history has been lost,” says Duncan. “To learn the possible origins of yoga and develop a deeper understanding of it will provide, especially black and brown people, a sense of pride and connection.”

Kemetic movement focuses on meditation and breathwork before any movement. While flows are typically slower-paced, there are also faster-paced and more challenging postures. The Kemetic movement classes offered at Urban Sanctuary will have similar flows each practice to build up muscle memory and direct more clearing and healing energy for the body.

“Offering Kemetic Movement at Urban Sanctuary goes along with our work to shine the light on the truth, unity, inclusivity and decolonization of yoga, while also supporting the black community by highlighting their roots.”

Kemetic Movement will be available Saturday starting on July 24 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. More classes will be added in the future.
